25 Years Later, First Big G Driver Still Rolling with the Company
Posted: April 3, 2020
When Danny Smith joined the Big G Express, a premier over-the-road trucking company headquartered in Shelbyville, Tenn., he didn’t know he’d still be rolling with the company a quarter century later but here he is celebrating the company’s 25th anniversary as well as his own.
“I had had a few business dealings with [Big G founders] Jack and Pat Marsh through another truck line,” Danny recalls. “I called Jack and he offered me a driving job on the spot and I took it. That was back in 1995 and I’m still here!”
Since then, Danny has been an over-the-road (OTR) driver for Big G hauling all types of dry freight from health and beauty products to water and paper goods. “I’ve been to all 48 lower states,” he says. “I love the freedom and seeing the country. I’ve always been the guy who wanted the load going to an odd or out-of-the-way place.”
Why has Danny stuck with the company when so many drivers tend to job-hop? “So many positives at Big G,” he says. “I always get home weekly, which has been great for me. The people here accept you as you are. They’ve always been family to me. When you come to Big G, get ready to make some friends because they’re going to get to know you personally.”
Danny’s advice to new truck drivers is to make sure you understand the nature of the job. “You have to be realistic about what to expect,” he says. “Once you do that and know what you’re looking for, find a carrier that will treat you right. It makes all the difference in the world.”
One way Danny says Big G stands above other carriers is by being 100% employee owned. “The employee stock ownership program (ESOP) is a huge benefit,” Danny says. “The company is saving for my retirement, on my behalf. Trust me when I say my ESOP account is way bigger than my 401k, thanks to Big G.”
Danny and his family had lived in Shelbyville their whole lives but moved to Florida a few years ago to be closer to the beach. “There’s not much I haven’t seen on the road or in trucking since I joined Big G,” he says. “I’ve enjoyed truck driving and mentoring inexperienced or unsure drivers. It’s been a great career. I know people always wonder if the grass is greener elsewhere but I know what I have at Big G and I appreciate it.”
